An earthquake of the magnitude 3.2 on the Richter scale hit yesterday morning in the southernmost part of the Katla caldera in Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Tremors of this size are rather common but because of its epicenter it could clearly be felt in Vík and the vicinity.
Several local residents reported the quake to visir.is. It was followed by another one measuring 2.5 points on the Richter scale.
According to a statement from the Civil Defense Department, no further quakes were picked up by sensors in the area after 10:20 am yesterday.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported yesterday that there is no visible volcanic activity in the southernmost part of the Katla caldera but earth scientists continue to monitor the developments there closely.
