Underwater Volcano Found off West Iceland?

Underwater Volcano Found off West Iceland?
A mountain which the Icelandic Marine Research Institute (Hafró) discovered on the ocean floor west
off the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland during an expedition earlier this summer may turn out to be a previously unknown volcano.

Multi-laser measurements […] revealed a large underwater mountain deep off the foot of the continental shelf approximately 120 nautical miles west of Snæfellsnes,” a statement from Hafró reads, according to Fréttablaðið.
The mountain, which is at a depth of 950 to 1,400 meters is around 450 meters high, similar to Ingólfsfjall in south Iceland. However, it extends over 300 square kilometers, which is ten times the square measure of Ingólfsfjall.
The shape of the mountain is very similar to that of table mountains and it appears to be geologically young.
“The analysis of a rock sample from the mountain will determine whether this is the case or whether it is a volcano connected with an old drift belt, which might mean that it is 20 million years old,” the statement continues.
During the expedition multi-laser measurements were made between West Iceland and Greenland to map the shape of the ocean floor in these commonly-used fishing grounds and explore the environment of powerful ocean currents.
A total of 9,000 square kilometers were covered during the 11-day expedition.

Foreign Reporters Enter Icelandic Volcano

Foreign Reporters Enter Icelandic Volcano

Up to 40 foreign journalists and five foreign television channels have entered the volcanic crater Þríhnúkagígur in southwest Iceland in recent weeks. Managing director of Inside the Volcano Björn Ólafsson calls the crater a “diamond in the rough”.

Björn believes Þríhnúkagígur has the potential to become as big an attraction as the Blue Lagoon. His company started lowering travelers into the crater two weeks ago and Björn said foreign journalists have taken a keen interest in it, ruv.is reports.
Currently, only a limited number of people can enter the crater at the same time. However, there are ideas of drilling a tunnel into the crater for tourism purposes.

Minor Glacial Burst in South Iceland Volcano Katla

20.05.2012 | 13:00

Minor Glacial Burst in South Iceland Volcano Katla

A small glacial burst occurred in the volcano Katla, which lies underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap in south Iceland, on April 28 and lasted a few days. The activity was registered by seismic monitors and increased conductivity was measured in the river Múlakvísl until May 7.

Last summer a large glacial burst, probably caused by a minor eruption in Katla, caused the river to swell and tear a hole in the Ring Road, right at the height of the tourism season in early July.

Oddur Sigurðsson, a geologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told visir.is that the glacial burst in late April was so insignificant that it couldn’t be detected by the naked eye.
Oddur explained that it was caused by geothermal activity in one of Katla’s craters.
Volcano enthusiast and blogger Jón Frímann Jónsson reported on two events in Katla, on April 28 and May 6 or 7, and considers them to be warning signals: something is happening in the volcano, he predicts.
He also commented on the recent series of earthquakes which hit Herðubreið in the northeastern highlands early this week.

Slight earthquake in KATLA

ICELAND REVIEW

November 09 | New Quake in Iceland’s Katla Volcano Was Felt in Vík

An earthquake of the magnitude 3.2 on the Richter scale hit yesterday morning in the southernmost part of the Katla caldera in Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Tremors of this size are rather common but because of its epicenter it could clearly be felt in Vík and the vicinity.
Several local residents reported the quake to visir.is. It was followed by another one measuring 2.5 points on the Richter scale.
According to a statement from the Civil Defense Department, no further quakes were picked up by sensors in the area after 10:20 am yesterday.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported yesterday that there is no visible volcanic activity in the southernmost part of the Katla caldera but earth scientists continue to monitor the developments there closely.

Earthquake in north Iceland

ICELAND REVIEW

Three Sharp Earthquakes Hit North Iceland

Three earthquakes measuring well over three points on the Richter scale, the strongest of which was 3.6 points, hit 34 kilometers north of Siglufjördur, north Iceland, yesterday morning.

The staff of the Icelandic Meteorological Office informed visir.is that earthquakes are common in this area and there were no reports of people having felt the tremors.

What meteorologists thought would evolve into a series of earthquakes later subsided and the area was quiet last night, visir.is reports.

Instead sensors picked up a series of minor earthquakes in another area well-known for seismic activity; seven to nine kilometers northwest of Reykjanestá in the southwestern part of the country.

According to mbl.is, all the earthquakes were rather small although about ten in the series measured above two points on the Richter scale.

Slight earthquake in Askja

ICELAND REVIEW

14.10.2011 | 11:46

Sharp Earthquake by Askja in Northeast Highlands

An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was picked up by sensors to the north of the outer Dyngjufjöll mountain range by the volcano Askja in the northeastern highlands at 4:15 am. It was the largest in a series of minor earthquakes last night.

There has been some seismic activity in the area lately with the ground trembling this week and last, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, mbl.is reports.
It was pointed out that the earthquakes didn’t originate inside the Askja crater itself, but rather to the northwest of it.
The strongest earthquake last night appeared to be relatively shallow, yet neither the quake nor the recent seismic activity is necessarily an indication of any other activity brewing in the area.
It is rather common for earthquakes to hit the region; a few years ago some series of earthquakes were picked up there.
