Minor Series of Earthquakes by Katla Volcano

Six earthquakes measuring between two and three on the Richter scale—the strongest of which was close to three—were picked up by sensors on Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland, close to the volcano Katla which lies underneath the icecap, yesterday. 

Another tremor, measuring 2.1 on the Richter scale, followed in the night along with some smaller quakes. Earth scientists are monitoring the area due to increased seismic activity in the past months, visir.is reports. 

This latest series of earthquakes is considered to be similar in character as those preceding it and not an indication of any other activity in the volcano, as stated in another article on visir.is. 

Last week sensors picked up 535 earthquakes in the entire country, including two series which hit north of Siglunes by Siglufjördur in north Iceland and off Reykjanes peninsula in the southwest. The largest quakes measured 3.4 points on the Richter scale. 

In past weeks manmade earthquakes have been reported as a result of Reykjavík Energy pumping water into the ground on Hellisheidi, upsetting the inhabitants of Hveragerdi. Last week much fewer tremors caused by this activity were reported than the week before.
