Highland Roads Open in Iceland
The road to the Kverkfjöll mountains in the northeastern highlands has now been opened and travelers can drive to Askja volcano by entering road F910.

The first mountain roads to open this summer tourism season were the road across Kjölur, connecting south and north Iceland, and part of the road to Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands, last week.
According to the Icelandic Road Administration, this is rather early for mountain roads to open. However, other roads are still closed by snow, including the road across Sprengisandur between north and south Iceland and Fjallabaksleið nyrðri in the southern highlands, Morgunblaðið reports.
The opening of highland roads depends on the weather in spring and early summer, whether they were snowed under during the winter and whether the track is wet. If the roads are opened too early they risk suffering damages.
Travelers can obtain information about road openings and conditions on vegagerdin.is. They are asked to respect signs indicating road closures.
ICE-SAR recently announced that people who call emergency services because they have run into trouble on roads marked as closed must pay for their rescue. Otherwise, such services are free. Go to safetravel.is for further information.
