Sharp Earthquake by Askja in Northeast Highlands

An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was picked up by sensors to the north of the outer Dyngjufjöll mountain range by the volcano Askja in the northeastern highlands at 4:15 am. It was the largest in a series of minor earthquakes last night.

There has been some seismic activity in the area lately with the ground trembling this week and last, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, mbl.is reports.
It was pointed out that the earthquakes didn’t originate inside the Askja crater itself, but rather to the northwest of it.
The strongest earthquake last night appeared to be relatively shallow, yet neither the quake nor the recent seismic activity is necessarily an indication of any other activity brewing in the area.
It is rather common for earthquakes to hit the region; a few years ago some series of earthquakes were picked up there.
